During lockdown, WahV co-founder Jane da Mosto joined the steering group of what is a fast growing network of community activists scrutinising and campaigning about the unsustainable environmental, economic and humanitarian aspects of cruise ship activities.
As a result of collaboration with other activists across the world, the Global Cruise Activist Network was launched in September 2020 and featured in news outlets around the world. It is comprised of cruise port residents, civil society representatives, professionals and labour and crime victim advocates from every continent. A set of Principles for Responsible Cruising have been compiled and translated into several languages, including Italian. It provides a forum for sharing information and taking collective action to prevent the industry from returning to ‘business as usual’.
WahV believes that Venice’s high-profile struggle with cruise tourism can be useful to help push for global reform of the industry.
