At the beginning of May, We are here Venice was in Dublin for the kick off workshop of the WaterLANDS consortium made of 32 organizations and six important sites that will be restored in the context of the European Green Deal.
The Venice Lagoon is one of these Action Sites, as the largest coastal wetland in Italy with a unique range of biotypes including salt marshes, reed beds and seagrass meadows. WahV had the opportunity to talk with distinguished wetlands scientists and practitioners about ecological restoration, community and stakeholders engagement practices and restoration finance in the context of the European Union wetlands and beyond.
During the kick-off meeting, part of the WahV team went on a field trip on the Abbeyleix Bog Walk, where supporting community peatland restoration and conservation efforts across Ireland are happening, while others went to Wicklow Mountain National Park visiting an active upland blanket bog, which has received recent corporate investment.
We are looking forward to welcoming the WaterLANDS consortium in Venice to explore the lagoon opportunities for upscaling ecological restoration through community active participation drawing on the knowledge of experienced advisors and sites in many other countries. This project receives funding from the EU Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation Programme.
